Before I go any further, I must explain that when I use the word, God, I am not referring to a particular religious entity. Instead, when I say, God, I mean the intelligence behind the entire existence or the source from which all things arise and through which all things are sustained.

Anyway, one of the greatest causes of anxiety in my life used to be uncertainty about money and financial opportunities. Whenever someone promised me a payment or an opportunity that could improve my financial situation, I would find myself worrying whether it would actually happen. My mind would begin creating different scenarios. What if they changed their mind? What if the deal fell through? What if the money never arrived? Even when there was no evidence that something would go wrong, I would still feel uneasy because the outcome was not yet certain.

Over time, however, I began to realize that my anxiety was caused by a serious misunderstanding. I was treating people as the ultimate source of my provision. I was looking at the channel and forgetting the source behind the channel.

The realization that therefore changed my perspective was that God is the ultimate source and supplier, and the people offering financial opportunities are channels through which God operates. If the God-force within them leaves, they die and become corpses. It is God who is experiencing physical reality through them.

For this reason, if one person refuses to offer me financial assistance or if they deny me a financial opportunity, I tell myself that they are just a channel through which the intelligent force behind existence operates, and I remind myself that there are many channels through which this intelligence – God – can bring financial opportunities or assistance to me.

This understanding has helped me reduce a great deal of unnecessary anxiety and pain. In the past, when someone promised me a financial opportunity, I would mentally cling to that promise and I would begin building expectations around it, and if there was delay or refusal, I would become frustrated and even resentful toward them for not fulfilling their promise.

Now, things have changed. Whenever I catch myself angry or resentful because of a missed financial opportunity, I remind myself that I am focusing on the channel rather than the source. I tell myself that if the opportunity was meant to be mine, the source will just provide it to me through another channel.

Many people place too much power in human beings. They believe that a particular person is fully responsible for their success or financial well-being. As a result, they become fearful whenever that person seems unwilling to help them. They forget that every human being is just a vessel through which the God-force experiences physical reality.

Besides placing too much power in human beings, people also place too much power in their projects and they become depressed when these projects fail. They forget that the projects are just another channel. They are unaware that, God, the ultimate supplier, can provide in many different ways besides their projects.

This is something I have had to remind myself many times. Whenever I became attached to a particular project, I would start treating it as though my future depended entirely on it. If the project showed signs of success, I felt hopeful and secure. If it showed signs of failure, I felt discouraged and anxious. Looking back, I can see that I unknowingly elevated my projects to the status of the ultimate supplier when, in reality, they were just channels.

By the way, I have now realized that some of the greatest opportunities in life arrive from directions we never anticipate. Before they appear, they do not even exist in our imagination. This alone should make us humble about our ability to predict how provision will arrive. We often become obsessed with one possibility while completely unaware of the many possibilities that remain hidden from our awareness.

Today, I no longer see a failed project as proof that abundance has abandoned me. Instead, I see it as a closed channel and I know that the ultimate supplier is always abundant because the supplier is everything. The source from which all things arise can never be depleted.

This understanding gives me peace because I know that it is only a matter of time before another channel opens. That channel may come from a direction I expect, or it may emerge from a place I never considered. It may arrive through a person I already know, or through someone I have never met before. It may come through a project I am currently working on, or through an entirely different opportunity that does not yet exist in my awareness.

The important thing is that I do not confuse the channel with the supplier. Channels can fail, but the supplier never runs out of possibilities.

This does not mean that I never seek financial opportunities from people, nor does it mean that I stopped asking for financial help when I need it. I respect all people as channels through which The Divine expresses itself, and I remain open to the opportunities and assistance that come through people. However, I no longer view any particular person as the ultimate source of my provision. When someone refuses to help me or when an expected financial opportunity fails to materialize, I try not to become discouraged as I remind myself that God is the ultimate supplier and that people are merely channels through which that supply flows.

Emmet Fox articulates this same principle in his book, Sermon on the Mount, saying…

“People think of their supply as coming from certain investments, or from a business, or from an employer, perhaps; whereas these are merely the channels through which it comes, God being the Source. The number of possible channels is infinite, the Source is One. The particular channel through which you are getting your supply is quite likely to change, because change is the Cosmic Law for manifestation. Stagnation is really death; but as long as you realize that the Source of your supply is the one unchangeable Spirit, all is well. The fading out of one channel will be but the signal for the opening of another. If, on the other hand, like most people, you regard the particular channel as being the source, then when that channel fails, as it is very likely to do, you are left stranded, because you believe that the source has dried up—and for practical purposes, on the physical plane, things are as we believe them to be.”
