After trying to control my life for years, I have eventually given up and I have surrendered to the will of the universe. I have noticed that it is impossible to control life despite knowing that my thoughts create reality. I have also realized that hard work, persistence, or consistency do not guarantee anything, and they can even lead to frustration if they don’t cause progress. In other words, I have noticed that life has its own flow and it’s difficult and strenuous to try to force it to go my way, and therefore, I have decided to surrender to life.
I have decided to accept whatever happens, whether it’s good or bad, because I have learned that I control a very small aspect of my life since a large part of it is filled with external factors beyond my control.
While embracing surrender, I started reading books that discuss it, and I noted down the following surrender quotes.
- ‘When real surrender comes from your heart, God will guide you in every step of your life and you can never do wrong.’- Ramakrishna Paramahamsa
- ‘When you surrender, you are acknowledging that there is a life force greater than your ego, that’s all.’ — Paramahamsa Nithyananda, The Book of Surrender
- ‘Out of surrender arises deep relaxation. Out of surrender arises a fresh intelligence that knows on a different plane. On this plane, there is no worry of result, there is only action driven by pure energy. And energy is intelligence.’ – Paramahamsa Nithyananda, The Book of Surrender
- ‘Surrender is such a vast subject, such a great truth. To tell you honestly there is only one thing I still continue to learn, learn, and learn. That is surrender! It is the ultimate technique to merge with Existence.’ – Paramahamsa Nithyananda, The Book of Surrender
- ‘Surrender is allowing Existence to happen through you.’ – Paramahamsa Nithyananda, The Book of Surrender
- ‘When you first surrender, the different qualities of the cosmos start expressing in you.’ – Paramahamsa Nithyananda, The Book of Surrender
- ‘When you yield internally, when you surrender, a new dimension of consciousness opens up. If action is possible or necessary, your action will be in alignment with the whole and supported by creative intelligence, the unconditioned consciousness which in a state of inner openness you become one with.’ – Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth
- ‘The surrendered state of consciousness opens up the vertical dimension in your life, the dimension of depth. Something will then come forth from that dimension into this world, something of infinite value that otherwise would have remained unmanifested. Some people who surrendered to severe limitation become healers or spiritual teachers. Others work selflessly to lessen human suffering or bring some creative gift into this world.’- Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth
- You know in daily life what absolute surrender is. You know that everything has to be given up to its special, definite object and service. I have a pen in my pocket, and that pen is absolutely surrendered to the one work of writing, and that pen must be absolutely surrendered to my hand if I am to write properly with it. If another holds it partly, I cannot write properly. This coat is absolutely given up to me to, cover my body. This building is entirely given up to religious services. And now, do you expect that in your immortal being, in the divine nature that you have received by regeneration, God can work His work, every day and every hour, unless you are entirely given up to Him?’ – Andrew Murray, Absolute Surrender
- ‘If God allows the sun to shine upon you moment by moment, without intermission, will not God let His life shine upon you every moment? And why have you not experienced it? Because you have not trusted God for it, and you do not surrender yourself absolutely to God in that trust.’ – Andrew Murray, Absolute Surrender
- ‘A life of absolute surrender has its difficulties. I do not deny that. Yes, it has something far more than difficulties: it is a life that with men is absolutely impossible. But by the grace of God, by the power of God, by the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, it is a life to which we are destined, and a life that is possible for us, praise God! Let us believe that God will maintain it.’ – Andrew Murray, Absolute Surrender
- ‘Only a surrendered person has true spiritual power.’ – Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now
- ‘Surrender is the simple but profound wisdom of yielding to rather than opposing the flow of life. The only place where you can experience the flow of life is the Now, so to surrender is to accept the present moment unconditionally and without reservation. It is to relinquish inner resistance to what is. Inner resistance is to say “no” to what is, through mental judgment and emotional negativity.’ – Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now
- ‘There is something within you that remains unaffected by the transient circumstances that make up your life situation, and only through surrender do you have access to it. It is your life, your very Being – which exists eternally in the timeless realm of the present.’ – Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now
- ‘Surrender reconnects you with the source-energy of Being.’ – Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now
- ‘In the state of surrender, you see very clearly what needs to be done, and you take action, doing one thing at a time and focusing on one thing at a time.’ – Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now
- ‘The more surrendered we are, the less prone we are to stress.’ – David Hawkins, Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender
- ‘To be surrendered means to have no strong emotion about a thing: “It’s okay if it happens, and it’s okay if it doesn’t.” When we are free, there is a letting go of attachments. We can enjoy a thing, but we don’t need it for our happiness. There is progressive diminishing of dependence on anything or anyone outside of ourselves. These principles are in accord with the basic teaching of the Buddha to avoid attachment to worldly phenomena, as well as the basic teaching of Jesus Christ to “be in the world but not of it.” – David Hawkins, Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender
- ‘The impossible becomes possible as soon as we are totally surrendered.’- David Hawkins, Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender
- ‘So, serious spiritual work is a continuous willingness to let things go as they arise. It is the willingness to surrender wanting to control everything as it arises, the willingness to surrender wanting to change it, and to have it our way.’ – David Hawkins, Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender
- ‘In Reality, the sun shines and then the clouds come; the rain falls and the grass grows up and dies; the stock market goes up and down; age comes and goes; people arise and leave. And, so, there’s the ebb and flow. If you are at this one point of the cycle, there’s no use in crying about it because the cycle will cycle itself out. By surrendering to whatever is cycling up, it eventually disappears. You disappear it by choosing to be one with it and refusing to want to change it as it arises. Do this continuously, no matter what, nonstop.’ – David Hawkins, Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender
- ‘Surrender” here is the process of tearing off the illusory veil, which caused a sense of separation between the devotee and God. The result is the realization of the devotee’s oneness with Him. So “surrender” here denotes the vanishing of the non-existent ego and therefore a victory of the devotee.’ – Swami Sadasivananda Giri, Surrender: The True Meaning and Method of Surrender
- ‘Complete surrender to God means giving up all Thoughts and concentrating the mind on Him.’ – Swami Sadasivananda Giri, Surrender: The True Meaning and Method of Surrender
- ‘Complete surrender is impossible in the beginning. Partial surrender is certainly possible for all. In course of time that will lead to complete surrender.’ – Swami Sadasivananda Giri, Surrender: The True Meaning and Method of Surrender
- ‘By that stage of my growth, I could see that the practice of surrender was actually done in two, very distinct steps: first, you let go of the personal reactions of like and dislike that form inside your mind and heart; and second, with the resultant sense of clarity, you simply look to see what is being asked of you by the situation unfolding in front of you. What would you be doing if you weren’t being influenced by the reactions of like or dislike?’ – Michael Singer, The Surrender Experiment
- ‘My experiment with surrender had taught me to always be present in the current moment and do my best to not allow my personal preferences to make decisions for me. Instead, I allowed the reality of life to determine where I was going.’ – Michael Singer, The Surrender Experiment
- ‘As I look back now, I am so grateful that surrender had taught me to willingly participate in life’s dance with a quiet mind and an open heart.’ – Michael Singer, The Surrender Experiment
- ‘All the events that had unfolded so far in my experiment with surrender had shown me that the more I was willing to let go of the inner noise created by my personal likes and dislikes, the more I could see subtle synchronicities in what was unfolding around me. These unexpected concurrences of events were like messages from life gently nudging me in the direction she was going. I listened to these subtle nudges instead of listening to the not-so-subtle mental and emotional reactions caused by my personal preferences. This is how I practiced surrender in everyday life.’ – Michael Singer, The Surrender Experiment
- ‘God is all around. Actually, only God exists, nothing else. But we are dreaming, so that which is, is not seen. Let go of dreams. Leaving dreams, not the world, is what sannyas, or surrender, is. And he who drops dreams finds that he himself is God.’ – Osho, Life is a Soap Bubble
- “Will existence really protect me if I allow myself to let go?” It has always protected, and I can’t think it is going to be different just with you. I cannot believe that you are going to be an exception. It has always been so—existence has protected those who have left themselves to it, who have abandoned themselves to it, who have surrendered themselves to it.” – Osho, Fear: Understanding and Accepting the Insecurities of Life
- ‘Surrendering is throwing the ego.’ – Osho
- ‘Surrender means you don’t think of life as the enemy but as the friend.’ – Osho

- ‘Learning to surrender to a very sophisticated Deity has been the single most important lesson of my life.’ – Shirley MacLaine

- ‘Surrender is an inner state of being and your relationship to life. A commitment to follow where life leads you. Sometimes it leads you beside quiet waters. Other times it leads you straight into the fire. But surrender is the knowing that wherever life leads you, there is a reason, you are ready, and life will back you up.’ – Kute Blackson, The Magic of Surrender

- ‘The more surrendered you are, the more intuitive and open to a deeper flow of knowledge you will be.’ – Judith Orloff, The Ecstasy of Surrender.
- ‘Surrender opens you to states of grace where blessings of success are bestowed. You can’t will grace to appear in your life but you can invite and welcome it in with a more surrendered outlook.’- Judith Orloff, The Ecstasy of Surrender.
- ‘As an ongoing approach to life, try surrendering to a higher power to assist you, even if you don’t understand it or fully believe. Then wait, watch, and breathe. In this letting-go state, your energy goes to where it can do the most good, a secret to conjuring power without effort. If you can back off enough to listen, spirit will you a flow you can go with.’ – Judith Orloff, The Ecstasy of Surrender
- ‘There is this idea that you must know your plan, your direction, and your outcome before you even begin. That you must have all the answers or have it all figured out. This is a myth. To surrender is to be open to what you don’t know. To surrender is to stop trying to force your way. Surrender is the art of allowing. So that there’s space for the universe to show up.’ – Kute Blackson, The Magic of Surrender
